How the Date Difference Calculator works

Pick a start date and an end date, and the calculator shows the number of days between them. It also shows the same span as weeks and days, plus approximate months and years. It works from real calendar dates rather than a fixed 365-day year, so leap years are handled correctly without any extra input. The result updates as soon as you change either date or the checkbox, and it makes no difference which date you enter first.

A worked example

From 1 March 2026 to 5 March 2026 is 4 days. Tick “Include the end date in the count” and the answer becomes 5 days. A longer span: 1 January 2026 to 25 December 2026 is 358 days, shown as 51 weeks and 1 day, or roughly 11 months. Over several years, 1 January 2020 to 1 January 2026 is 2,192 days. That is six ordinary years of 365 days plus two leap days, 29 February 2020 and 29 February 2024.

Including or excluding the end date

The checkbox changes what you are counting. Without it, the calculator measures the gap between two dates, which is the right answer for questions like “how many days until my flight?” or “how many nights is the hotel stay?” With it ticked, both the first and last day are counted, which suits events and deadlines described as “5 days, from the 1st to the 5th.” If you are unsure, check how the other party counts: contracts, visa rules and return policies sometimes state this explicitly.

Common uses

People use a date difference calculator to count down to a trip, wedding or exam, to check how long a lease, warranty or free trial has left, to work out the length of a notice period, and to see how long a project has been running. It is also handy for checking the gap between two invoices, two medical appointments, or the date something was bought and the end of a return window.

About the months and years figures

Months and years are shown as approximations because calendar months have different lengths. The calculator divides the day count by the average month length (about 30.44 days) and the average year length (365.25 days), and rounds down. For an exact breakdown in years, months and days from a birth date, the Age Calculator is the better tool, since it follows the actual calendar month by month.

What this tool does not count

The result includes every calendar day, weekends and public holidays included. It is not a working-days calculator. The tool also works with dates only, not clock times or time zones, so a span such as “24 hours” shows as 1 day.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What if I enter the “to” date before the “from” date?
You get the same day count either way. The calculator measures the gap between the two dates without assuming a direction, so you do not need to swap them.
Does this account for leap years?
Yes. The calculation uses real calendar dates, so 29 February is counted whenever it falls between your two dates. For example, 28 February to 1 March is 2 days in 2024 but 1 day in 2023.
When should I tick “Include the end date”?
Tick it when you want to count every calendar day involved, such as a 5-day event running from the 1st to the 5th. Leave it unticked when you want the gap or the number of nights, such as a hotel stay or the days remaining until a deadline.
How is this different from the Age Calculator?
The Age Calculator is built around a birth date and shows years, months and days. This tool works for any two dates and focuses on the total number of days, which is more useful for trips, deadlines and contracts.
Does it count working days or skip weekends?
No. It counts every calendar day, including weekends and public holidays. If you need business days, subtract the weekends and any holidays yourself, or treat this result as an upper limit.
Why are the months and years only approximate?
Months range from 28 to 31 days, so there is no single exact conversion from days. The calculator uses average lengths and rounds down. The day count itself is always exact.
Can I use it for future dates, like a countdown?
Yes. Enter today as the start date and your future date as the end date to see how many days remain. It works equally well for dates in the past.
