MEASUREMENT
Measurement Converters
Recipes in cups, roads in miles, parcels in pounds: measurements rarely come in the unit you need. These free converters switch between metric and imperial units instantly and show the factor behind each result.
Use the Unit Converter for length, weight and volume, and the Cooking Measurement Converter for kitchen measures. Each one runs in your browser and needs no sign-up.

How these converters work
Each converter multiplies by a fixed conversion factor and shows the steps under the result. They convert within one kind of measure: length to length, weight to weight and volume to volume. Converting between kinds, such as cups to grams, depends on what is being measured, so these tools do not do it.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Why do some online converters give slightly different results?
They may round differently or use slightly different conversion factors. These converters use standard factors and show the steps, so you can check any figure.
Can I convert between types, like weight to volume?
No. The Unit Converter converts within length, weight or volume. Turning weight into volume depends on the density of the material, which a unit converter cannot know.
Are the gallons US or UK?
US gallons, at 3.78541 litres. A UK imperial gallon is about 4.546 litres, so figures will differ if your source uses imperial gallons.
Is there temperature or area conversion?
Not at the moment. The Unit Converter covers length, weight and volume, the three conversions people need most often.
How many millilitres are in a cup?
The Cooking Measurement Converter uses a 240 millilitre cup. Real cup sizes vary a little between countries, so check the size your recipe assumes.
Can I convert cups of flour or sugar to grams?
Not directly. That depends on the ingredient's density and how tightly it is packed. The cooking converter handles volume-to-volume conversions only.
Do UK and Australian kitchen measures differ?
Slightly. UK recipes often use a 250 millilitre cup or millilitre and gram measures, and Australian tablespoons are 20 millilitres. The converter uses US spoon sizes, so adjust if your recipe comes from elsewhere.
Is a fluid ounce the same as an ounce of weight?
No. A fluid ounce measures volume and an ounce measures weight. They only match for water-like liquids by coincidence, so do not swap them in a recipe.
